There are so many ways that each of us can save the planet from pollution. Being mindful of them daily is very important. Getting our children, friends, employers, and communities involved is a great place to start. Educating children about saving the planet is a way for them to help too.
Get rid of all Styrofoam products. They don’t degrade so they stay in the landfills. Use refillable cups in their place. Get rid of plastic bottles too including those for water. Use eco friendly bottles that stay cold and that you can fill up again and again. Pay close attention to the packaging on products you buy too. If they aren’t eco friendly then boycott them.
More Ideas to Save the Planet from Pollution
Turn off lights when you don’t need them. Open up the curtains to let sunlight into your home. You can also use solar panels as a way to reduce your reliance on nonrenewable sources of energy. If you don’t get home until after dark put in a motion light or flameless candles on timers so that you don’t have to leave any lights on.
Turn down the temperature in your home by a few degrees and you will cut down on the amount of resources you use. Dress lighter when it is hot and put on a sweater when it is cold to help you stay comfortable.
Sign up for lists that cut down the amount of junk mail you will get. All of those trees wasted is really ridiculous. You can also sign up for paperless statements for your bills. Instead they can be emailed to you. Try sending e-cards too for birthdays and the holidays instead of paper ones. You will save on postage which is also a nice bonus.
While it is understandable you want a clean home those cleaners aren’t safe for you or the environment. If you have children or pets you are exposing them to toxins that aren’t good for them to be around. You can clean your home with eco friendly products so don’t feel that you must continue to use those dangerous products.
Make sure your vehicle isn’t contributing to high emissions. If you have an older vehicle have it tested. Try to cut down your commuting too. For example you can car pool so that there are fewer vehicles on the road or take public transportation. Try to walk or ride a bike when you can. If you do have to drive your vehicle often consider investing in a hybrid.
Avoid using chemicals on your lawn too. Fertilizers have many toxins in them and when it rains or you water the grass it runs into bodies of water. You can use natural fertilizer including leaves and manure. You can also use natural ways of removing pests and weeds from your yard and from your garden.
All of the small efforts you make to save the planet from pollution add up quickly. They don’t take much to do but they have wonderful benefits. You can feel proud of your lifestyle when you are confident that you don’t continue to create more problems. Instead, you are part of the solution to make the Earth better for all living things. Continue to learn too so that you can add new things to your anti pollution commitment as they are introduced.
As technology expands it makes it possible for people to do more and more. You don’t have to give up what you like to do, just find a better way to do it! For example eating food that is organically grown cuts down on chemicals that are being used to grow food.

We have come a very long way in society with various forms of technology to help us along. Through pollution control technologies though we have been able to control some of the contributions we have made that destroy our society. The air we breathe is very important and it has various forms of pollution in it.
There are systems in place that can now determine the quality of the air that we take in. Many industries also use them to make sure what they are expelling from their business is below the standards that the EPA has set in place. They don’t want to be known as a contributor of high levels of pollution. Not only would that create issues for them with the government, it would also prevent them from nurturing a good relationship with customers.

Water pollution is definitely a problem for us too. When you think about the amount of chemicals and organic compounds that come from the soil we have to take action. Human waste and dumping also contributes to these problems. There are tools in place that can measure the levels of contamination in water. They can allow experts to find out what the specific forms of pollution are as well.
Oil spills are a big part of water pollution. Today technology has been able to help with reducing such risks. Through training plans, routine maintenance, and fast clean up efforts there is less of a chance for such water pollution to have adverse effects.

Chemicals are often used on the soil to be able to grow food. Pesticides and herbicides are used in high volumes. The fact that the weeds and pests seem to build up a tolerance for it over time means that the chemicals have become stronger. Even the amount of acid that is found in rain has been able to be calculated and addressed. The thickness of the ozone layer is another area where technology has allowed us to see just what we are doing in terms of overall damages. Noise pollution can’t be left out of this equation either. Technology has provided the resources for helping to reduce it. Sound barriers are a very effective way to ensure we can use technology for our busy lives but also reduce the adverse effects from it on our bodies and minds.
Landfills are also an area of pollution and technology now allows us to be able to reuse and recycle up to 80% of what was once tossed into the landfills. Of course it all comes down to people being creative. It also comes down to them taking the time for recycling instead of just tossing everything into a garbage can.
Through all of the testing and studies done technology has allowed us to do more than just identify the sources of pollution though. They have given us key methods of being able to take action individually, as a society, and around the world. By now most people realize that pollution has a very serious effect on all of us but by working as a team we can combat it.
Many experts continue to test out new methods of trying to eliminate pollution problems. They realize they have a huge challenge in front of them. Yet they aren’t willing to give up on the ideas and theories that they have. Hopefully they will one day find the solutions that ensure we have clean air, clean water, noise isn’t a problem, and even the soil is all good for us to be able to thrive.

We tend to think of radioactive contamination as just something that occurs in science fiction movies. It could be the result of a story line that causes many people to die and even for zombies to roam around the Earth. These sources of entertainment though don’t share the fact that radioactive contamination is a reality for people all over the world on a daily basis.
While there are proper disposal methods in place for radioactive materials there are times when they aren’t properly followed or accidents happen. The process involves all of that type of material being placed into a sealed container. Sometimes those forms of contamination though end up on a person’s skin, their clothing, or even into the soil.
Exposure to radiation can then be something that spreads quickly as the particles can be moved from one location to the next with ease. They often don’t have any physical appearance or odor. The movies often show radioactive materials being green and glowing but that isn’t the reality of it.

The most common means of radioactive contamination to occur is when someone takes a breath of air. If those types of contamination happen to be in the air then they will get into the body of that person. The particles are often spread around the environment when a person has them on the body or clothing. When they come into contact with new elements they can leave them behind.
When the radioactive material is on the soil it may be blown away with a gust of wind. Then it will be scattered around new areas. When it is underground it may be moved along with runoff water and find its way into the yard of a person, a public park, and even into the bodies of water. The types of contamination as well as the amounts of it in a given area will determine what the effects are.
Sometimes radioactive contamination can make a person very ill quickly. Other times though it will slowly cause health problems such as with the vital organs and breathing. Since the symptoms may not materialize right away it can be almost impossible to pinpoint the source of the contamination.
In many instances the radioactive materials have to be carefully diluted from their original form. That allows for it to be safe in the environment instead of a major risk. This type of process can be very complex though to design. It can be time consuming and expensive but it has to be done to help reduce the possible negative outcomes from radioactive contamination.
Keeping a watchful eye on radioactive contamination is a very serious matter. Industries that have this type of material to dispose of are given very specific guidelines. They should be routinely checked up on. Any spills or possible contamination should be immediately reported to the government.
Yet there are believed to be many times when such problems go unnoticed or they are simply covered up to avoid fines, clean up procedures, and negative publicity. The issue of nuclear weapons and testing is also a huge concern for many people. Studies show that if there were nuclear bomb to be released that a large number of people, animals, and plant life wouldn’t be able to survive.
Even with nuclear fallout shelters out there to help with reducing exposure to radioactive contamination it continues to be a huge concern. This is why most governments have taken steps to be able to counter any nuclear weapons that may be sent their way from others. That is the best way to help with taking away the chances of someone having such power and control over others. It has also helped to slow down the nuclear arms race that was once very dominant.

Litter isn’t just what people toss out of the car window as they drive along or leave at the park on a picnic table. It has to do with the garbage that they place into a landfill on a regular basis. Sadly, only about 20% of what people do place into the trash can to be picked up can’t be reused or recycled.
Therefore, it is very important for people to change their ways. Developing a plan of action for recycling can dramatically reduce what ends up in our landfills. It can also help you to cut down on overall household expenses in ways that you never thought possible. Keep in mind that what goes into our landfills can remain there for decades. It can seep into the soil and then be taken with run off into the sources of water.
Too often people see the landfill as the solution to garbage pollution. The fact that these areas are outside of town means most people fail to see them and all that is there. They don’t see all of the household items and trash that have been brought to those areas. Even with compacting the volume of waste materials is overwhelming. At the same time there are various types of toxins created from all of it.
They include carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane. Those elements can get into the air and cause problems for people in terms of the air that they breathe in. The soil also becomes polluted due to the different compounds that break down in there. When it rains run off from the landfills can end up into the various bodies of water. Even with water treatment plants many of them can’t be filtered out.
It may surprise you to learn that at least 50% of the waste from your home is classified as wet garbage. This includes items such as cleaners for homes, paint, hair supplies, nail polish, and any other chemicals that you may use on a regular basis around your home.
For many landfills out there, space has become an issue. There is no more area for them to continue placing new items. Some think that when those landfills are closed then they no longer pose a risk to the environment. However, they can continue to do so even if they have been capped with cement. It doesn’t prevent pollution from getting through the soil and into the water and the air we breathe.

One method of helping to reduce garbage pollution is to place liners at the bottom of them. There can still be times when chemicals and other elements will leak through them though. By reducing the amount of garbage that each household and every business offers there will be a lower problem than we have right now. As the population grows there just doesn’t seem to be enough room for all that they through out. Getting into the habit of reusing and recycling products can make a dramatic difference.

Oil pollution is a very serious problem due to the forms of aquatic life that are affected by it. Their bodies, habitat, and food sources can be quickly destroyed. Taking efforts to reduce the chances of oil pollution occurring is very important. The Federal government took such action after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in the 1990s.

They devised a plan of action that puts the resources of the Federal government into motion as soon as an oil spill occurs. It doesn’t matter if it is small, medium, or extremely large. The idea is to isolate the problem, control it, and to clean up as quickly as possible. Reducing long term effects from oil pollution requires immediate action.
Part of the plan by the Federal government for preventing oil spills is the development of strict guidelines for vessels out there. They have to conform to the standards and if they are caught violating them there are fines and fees. Should a company be found to be responsible for an oil spill they will have to pay for all of the cost of cleaning it up. BP found out recently that the Federal government wasn’t joking.
Well maintained equipment is essential to the prevention of oil pollution. When it comes to oil spills isn’t an issue of if it will happen but rather an issue of when it will take place. There are more than 200,000 million tons of oil transported annually in the bodies of water. Carefully inspecting equipment and taking action to prevent accidents is a big part of stopping huge problems from occurring.
Many of the vessels built today for the transport of oil have safety regulators on them. They are designed to reduce the amount of oil that could possibly spill out of them should there be an accident. This means that even though there would be some oil spilled it won’t end up being thousands of gallons.

Safety drills should be done at regular intervals as an act of prevention of oil pollution. All new employees should have in depth training and be able to show the physical ability to assist in times of crisis.
Prevention of oil pollution is a huge step to protecting our water and the marine life that lives there. Too many times in the past huge oil spills have had profound effects on society. The latest one being the BP oil spill. Each time something like that happens new ideas seem to emerge for preventing oil spills and speeding up the clean up process.
We are dependent upon oil and so that is why so many people look the other way when some of it is spilled in the water. However, we also have to realize that we are also dependent on water. Should we allow oil to ruin it that can limit what we have access to. We are also dependent on the forms of marine life that live in those waters. When they and their habitats are destroyed it comes back on all living things in a negative way. With budget cuts many owners have considered not doing the maintenance that they should. They feel it is a way to cut costs but they are playing with fire. When there is an oil spill they can be responsible to foot the bill. Any time that there is an oil spill though consumers feel it. They will have to pay more for the fuel they use and that really is upsetting.

It is important to understand the amount of marine life that can be destroyed due to oil spills. There are more forms of aquatic life out there than most of us realize. When their habitat and food sources are ruined due to the oil they will die. That in turn has a rippling effect on the overall food chain in the circle of life.
The demand for oil has also increased the chances of an oil spill happening. As a society we are more dependent on it than ever before. That means there are more barrels of it being transported through the water than ever before. Statistically that is naturally going to increase the chances of some of it being spilled.
The fact that the equipment used for oil production is also very high means that when a spill does occur it could mean thousands and thousands of gallons of the oil being pumped into the water in a very short period of time. One gallon of oil in the water can create a slick that spans several acres. In the first three days of the BP oil spill it covered 580 square miles.
The consistency and the composition of oil changes as it mixes with water and that is one of the effects that can be complex to understand. It becomes very sticky and it will cling on to what it contacts. It can become a thick gel and that means that living forms of marine life can’t move like they should when it coats their bodies.
Some experts believe that certain fish and other forms of aquatic life are attracted to the smell of oil when it is in the water. That can further create larger problems due to the fact that it becomes so hard to keep them away from the regions where the oil has spilled. Many animals drown due to getting oil in their bodies and on their bodies.

Birds that land on the water can get the oil on their feathers. They can then stick to each other making it impossible for them to fly. Any creatures that have oil on them can become toxic to larger life forms that consume them too. Algae in the water tends to be a food source for many living things. It also prevents forms of harmful bacteria from being able to thrive. When there is an oil spill the algae can be destroyed. Then there is a lack of food for some living things. At the same time the risk of death due to bacteria and parasites increases for other living forms of aquatic life. In 1990 the Oil Pollution Act was approved by the Federal government. The development of oil had continued to increase up to that point. With so many people around the world being dependent on that oil we didn’t seem to care so much about the possibilities of pollution from it. When spills did occur it was often not widely reported and on a small scale.
Oil Pollution Act: Oil Spill Problem
Yet that all changed with the Exxon Valdez oil spill. The abundance of coverage about the issue demanded that the government take action. The volume of water that was polluted, the marine life that was killed, and the number of animals that were part of rescue efforts were huge. In fact, the experts believe that the damages were underestimated because at the time no one knew what the long term effects of the oil spill were going to be.
Under the Oil Pollution Act the Federal government has the responsibility, ability, and the resources to act to help with oil spill problems. There is up to $1 billion that can be allocated for all the efforts to clean up for any oil spill through the National Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund.
Yet the Oil Pollution Act doesn’t mean that the responsibility for clean up and the cost all falls on the Federal government. There are contingencies in place with all of the industry providers and carriers in place. Should there be any oil spill the Federal government will immediately respond. Early aid with efforts to clean up can limit the amount of pollution damage that occurs.
At the same time the owners and operators of any vessel involved with an oil spill has to have an approved plan of action in place as well. They have to do all they can to help resolve the situation as well. They will also be responsible for the major part of the cost of the clean up efforts from the oil spill.
There are very large financial penalties under the Oil Pollution Act for non compliance with the laws. This means any vessel that is deemed to have been negligent in taking all precautions against oil spills will be under fire. The Federal government has the authority to establish those laws, to oversee them, and to also investigate any oil spill to find out what the cause of it happened to be.
Yet many consumers aren’t happy with the Oil Pollution Act and what it entails. They feel that even though the responsible parties for such spills have to pay for them, how do they do so? They feel that they have to pay an increased rate for the fuel that they consume and that is how the cost of cleaning up is paid for.
This angers them because they feel they already pay a high enough amount for fuel. The dependency on foreign oil continues to be a topic of heated debate around the USA. Consumers also feel that they pay in taxes annually for the Federal government to have more say so in how funding will be allocated for clean up efforts.
While there are still some flaws and loopholes with the Oil Pollution Act, it has definitely helped to make sure that vessels involved with the oil industry are better maintained and operated. The idea is that many of the oil spills out there could have been prevented if those measures were taken earlier.
The widespread media attention and internet coverage of oil spills today has also been a deterrent. Companies don’t want to have a tarnished reputation for being responsible for adding to the oil pollution problem.

Noise pollution control is important to help reduce distractions and stress. Sure, a person can get used to noise outwardly but the body and the mind don’t respond well to it. A person can find it is hard to concentrate, their mood isn’t what it should be, and their hearing loss can’t be repaired over time when they are continually exposed to noise pollution. Too often it continues though and by the time a person realizes there is a problem it is too late.
In 1972 the Noise Control Act was passed in the United States. The idea was that citizens were being exposed too much to various types of noise. The EPA took steps to help ensure that people were able to cut down on what they were exposed to. As society grew and technology offered more the problem was getting out of control.

Airplanes have been an issue with noise control for a very long time. We rely on them for transportation, for being able to send merchandise, and for vacations so that we can get where we want to go in no time at all. Today the technology for airplanes has made them quieter than they were in the past. However, the volume of flights per day means that the noise we do hear from them is a concern.
There are still noise complaints that occur. In some locations noise has been limited by airplanes to specific hours. For example they don’t allow planes to land or take off from midnight until 6 am. There is plenty of marine life out there living in the oceans, but many of them are struggling to survive. They have been adversely affected by ocean pollution and if we don’t help them the chain reaction could be very serious for all living things including humans.
Toxins are very common in our society and they are destroying the habitat in the oceans around the world. They come from a variety of resources including the factories and oil production. One small oil spill in the ocean can profoundly ruin the life types that are living there. When you think about those larger oil spills that have occurred over the past several decades it is unbelievable the amount of marine life that has been destroyed.
Those that aren’t directly destroyed by the toxins may still suffer an ill fate. This is because their habitat becomes smaller and smaller. They have to compete for what little space is left that can be lived in. They also find that many of their sources of food have been destroyed along the way.
The amount of oxygen that is created and used by marine life is also affected. When there are various forms of organic waste that get into the ocean such as phosphorus and nitrogen there is going to be less oxygen found in a given location. The ecosystem simply won’t be able to effectively handle that volume of organic matter.
Algae is very common in bodies of water including the ocean. In fact, it can be a source of food for many forms of marine life. Yet when there are too many forms of organic waste in the water then algae can take over. It can kill off other forms of organisms and that too will quickly upset the balance of things in the water.
Ocean Pollution Effects on Marine Life: Problems with Land Pollution
The land pollution is directly related to problems with ocean pollution. As the chemicals get into the water they tend to cause sediment to be contaminated. This gets into the water due to runoff. This will destroy the coral reefs and areas of grass that grow in the ocean. So many forms of marine life rely on those sources of food for their survival.
Approximately 80% of the pollution that affects the ocean comes from the efforts of humans. There are so many issues that directly relate to problems in these areas. They include greenhouse gases that are destroying the ozone layers. It is believed that at least 40% of the marine life out there in the oceans has been adversely affected in some way due to ocean pollution.
Yet it isn’t just the fact that marine life forms are dying either. Studies show that their overall health and well being is suffering due to ocean pollution. This means that even though many forms of marine life are surviving their genetics and their overall methods of survival are being reduced from what they once were.
Toxins also affect these mammal marine life forms due to the foods that they eat. When they consume smaller fish for example that have toxins in them it is passed through their own bodies. It also gets into the milk that they offer for their young and that is part of why there is such a high mortality rate among so many of them. It is a chain reaction that continues to touch every level of marine life from the very small organisms to the huge mammals that are found in the oceans.
Marine life is directly linked to the overall survival of humans too. For example there are many forms of seafood with high levels of mercury in them. Humans that eat them can become very ill too. This is just one of the many reasons why well all have a responsibility to reduce ocean pollution.
